Art & Culture

The culture of Lucknow is still very much alive and retains its old world charm even today. Popularly known as the City of Nawabs, Lucknow is famous for traditional cuisine, fine arts and the most courteous people you will ever find in India. The cultural heritage of Lucknow was pretty much influenced by the Mughal era and you find that Mughal touch in almost everything that relates to the culture of Lucknow.

Heritage

We all know Lucknow as the City of Nawabs or the city of "Pehle aap, pehle aap" (after you, after you), in short, City of Tehzeeb (etiquette). Heritage is in no way a minor topic of discussion but then people talk more about the delicious kabab than about the 1881 Husainabad Clock Tower which is one of the tallest clocktowers in India or even about the stunning Bada Imambara .

Here are, in pictures, some of these popular heritage spots in Lucknow that you as a traveller must visit. They hold great stories, stories of how the city was transferred from hand to hand--Delhi Sultanate to Mughal Empire to Nawabs of Awadh and finally to the British in 1857. A city rich in history and even richer architecture, deserves your attention.

Spiritual

The City of Nawabs pulsates with an impressive mix of people, culture and tradition, owing to which there are countless religious places in Lucknow. From admiring the splendid architecture of the newly-constructed Balaji Temple and visiting almost 300-year old Chandrika Devi Temple to offering prayers at the 15th century Jama Masjid

And listening to the holy chants at the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple—there is a long list of things to do for religiously-inclined people in Lucknow. Filled with absolute spiritualism and piousness, these temples and dargahs will surely impress you with their remarkable architecture and glorious history.

Food & Cuisine

The most famous dishes of Lucknow are kormas, kaliya, nahari-kulchas, zarda, sheermal, roomali rotis and warqi parathas. It is not just the ingredients that are special but also the way they are made by expert hands and the way they are presented. Just looking at an elaborate layout of Lucknow cuisine will make your mouth water.

The most famous of all dishes are the Kebabs or the meatballs that come in different varieties. Some of the most famous (and delicious!) varieties of Kebabs are Kakori Kebabs, Shami Kebabs, Boti Kebabs, Patili-ke-Kababs, Ghutwa Kebabs and Seekh Kebabs.
